Anyone heard this new disc with Baron/Patton/Dunn? I am sure I will be picking it up, but wanted to see if anyone has listened to it yet.

Re: Moonchild
Thu, August 17, 2006 - 11:31 AMHey Starchy, glad you asked. It is nice in the following way: It's an improv hardcore album, with direction given from Zorn through oral communication. I will try to refrain from comparing it to any other music. But, I should say this; I am a big fan of the precision, heat and intensity from bands like Naked City, Fantomas, Boredoms, Mr. Bungle, etc., especially on albums like Grand Guignol, 1st Naked City album, Disco Volante, and the Spy Vs. Spy Ornette tribute. I think that I like this lineup for the same reasons I like the above mentioned ones, but it definitely has its own sound. It is sometimes fast, sometimes slow, but always intense.
It's VERY nice, because of the interesting line-up you noted. I'm not sure if there could be a better combination of musicians, for what was being attempted. I love the communication between Dunn and Baron, especially. Some people might say that there are few tricks in the bag, and I admit; if you know the players and their past works, the music you will hear might have been what you imagined it sounding like. That's ok though. It sounds real nice to me, even though it did not pack any surprises for me. I am confident you would agree that it's tough to beat Baron on drums or Dunn on bass, regardless of what style of music you are listening to. -
